Cambridge University is to end a partnership with a Chinese state-owned military technology firm whose parent company produces spacecraft, missiles and drones, The Times can reveal.
A research group within the university, the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (Cape), works with several Chinese firms, including the tech giant Huawei and a subsidiary of the main contractor on China’s space programme.
Documents obtained by the UK-China Transparency charity and shared with The Times show the university has worked on four research projects with the Beijing Institute of Aerospace Control Devices (BIACD).
A US State Department briefing note confirms that BIACD is a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, one of China’s largest state-owned manufacturing companies, supplying technology to the country’s space programme.
