Oxford students who join in the tradition of “trashing”, in which they throw drinks, shaving foam and confetti over each other after exams, are facing “punitive” fines.

University officials, who claim the mess costs £45,000 a year to clean up, are patrolling the city to hand out £150 penalties to anyone caught.

The first fines have been handed out and those who do not pay face disciplinary action.
