Universities will be expected to use supermarket customer-tracking software to identify struggling students as the government unveils its first mental health support champion, a minister will announce today.
Institutions will be encouraged to adopt “customer relationship management” systems akin to data collected by Nectar and Tesco Clubcards, to flag the early signs of students who are struggling. This will be done by monitoring their library use or attendance.
Professor Edward Peck, vice-chancellor of Nottingham Trent University, will today be announced as the first student support champion, who will advise universities on how to keep students engaged and spot early warning signs of mental health problems.
