Struggling regional universities are being starved of public funds by social engineering policies that funnel lower-grade deprived pupils into affluent central belt campuses.

Scottish admissions are stagnating or falling at universities in smaller cities and towns which are cutting staff, merging faculties and battling deficits in their revenue and pension pots. Meanwhile, figures reveal a surge in the number of less well off undergraduates flocking to Edinburgh and Glasgow.
