Cambridge University is to admit a record number of state school pupils this autumn. Its proportion of state- educated students has increased to 72.5 per cent of UK entrants, from 71.6 per cent last year.
Oxford and Cambridge have come under pressure in recent years to diversify their intake. Oxford University said last month that 68.3 per cent of places taken by British students had been confirmed to state school pupils, compared with 68.2 per cent last year, but this is lower than 68.6 per cent for 2020.
