An Oxford college that closed and sold off its buildings could have been saved, according to a businessman who says he made a £40 million offer to rescue it.

John Barry said he tried to save St Benet’s Hall, a Catholic private hall that was part of Oxford University. Founded in 1897 by Ampleforth Abbey in North Yorkshire, it tried to separate from the abbey but the university decided it was not financially viable.
