A former waitress and a volunteer youth worker are among the first 47 foundation-year students to start at Cambridge.

The scheme was launched to widen the university’s intake and attract candidates who would otherwise be unlikely to apply, such as care leavers or teenagers who are estranged from their parents. All those selected show academic talent and potential in the arts, humanities and social sciences. They will have achieved about three B grades at A-level, where the usual Cambridge offer is at least A*AA.
