The University of St Andrews, where the Prince of Wales met his wife, has opened “warm banks” to help students who cannot afford to heat their homes.
Lecture halls and refectories will be left unlocked at night, and free fruit and porridge will be offered to prevent undergraduates from going hungry.
Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, the principal and vice-chancellor, and Juan Pablo Rodriguez, president of the students’ association, outlined the plan in an email to staff and students.
It said: “We are taking steps to ensure that all university buildings are open to all staff and students to allow and encourage the use of communal warm spaces.
