Gay rights campaigners at Edinburgh University are to protest against the screening of Adult Human Female, a documentary that is said to be a “clear attack on trans people’s identities”.
The university has refused to give in to pressure from staff unions to cancel the film — which explores issues relating to trans and women’s rights — citing its commitment to “freedom of expression and academic freedom”. It said that it was its “duty” to ensure that staff and students felt able to discuss controversial topics, and that it encouraged “respectful debate”.
The 92-minute documentary, co-directed by Deirdre O’Neill and Mike Wayne, premiered in London last month but Eventbrite, the online ticketing agency, has since withdrawn its billing, including detail of the Edinburgh screening.
