Universities have been told to hold serious case reviews into all student deaths and set up dedicated teams to learn from what happened.
Guidance from Universities UK (UUK), which represents vice-chancellors, says student services should have a response plan and recommends training for all staff in the event of student deaths. It comes after some coroners criticised the way that universities have handled student suicides.
The document, which was drawn up with the help of Papyrus, the youth suicide prevention charity, and the Samaritans, says kind and timely support is needed for family and friends in matters such as dealing with the student’s belongings, accommodation and finances.
