When hundreds gathered at Parker’s Piece, a park in Cambridge, to oppose a “sustainable travel zone” many were surprised to hear the message of America’s most famous civil rights campaigner over the loudspeaker.
“Martin Luther King said, ‘Injustice in one place is injustice in every place’,” Daniel Lentell told the crowd, although they were not King’s actual words. It demonstrates the strength of feeling over plans by 2027-28 to charge drivers £5 on weekdays between 7am and 7pm to drive in and around the city.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership says that the £50 million a year it would raise would be used to cap bus fares, increase the routes and services and improve footpaths and cycle lanes.
The GCP says that there would be exemptions.
