A student society that pursued a campaign against a human rights law professor accused of Islamophobia displayed “fundamentalist bigotry”, a Muslim scholar has claimed, as an MP called for the resignation of the University of Bristol’s vice-chancellor.
Professor Steven Greer said he believed the university had put his life in danger to avoid being seen as anti-Muslim following a complaint by Bristol University Islamic Society (BriSoc) that his teaching and other public output was Islamophobic.
Greer was cleared of all wrongdoing after a five-month inquiry by a senior academic at Bristol, including after an appeal by BriSoc. An independent lawyer separately concluded that he had not been guilty of harassment under the Equality Act 2010.
