Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was my fantasy film as a teenager. Ferris bunks off classes on a sunny day in Chicago with his friends, nicks a Ferrari, fools his parents that he’s sick and outwits his deranged school principal, giving tips along the way on how to skive as he dodges between baseball games, art galleries and restaurants.

Now of course, I realise that the real hero was the ginger, moustachioed headmaster. What a legend. In pursuit of Ferris, he’s dragged through a hedge, mauled by a rottweiler and watches his car being towed away. But he won’t give up. He’s determined his pupil will go to school. The dedication to his job is astonishing. Why bother? asks his secretary.
