Head teachers say that £1.8 billion promised to repair crumbling buildings is too little and does not address years of neglect.
Unions have previously said that action must be taken to repair or replace deteriorating school buildings at risk of collapse.
The Department for Education (DfE) announced the funding yesterday for schools and colleges to upgrade buildings in England. The investment for the 2023-24 financial year is intended to improve the condition of the school estate. A further £487 million will be invested to help councils provide additional school places needed for September 2026.
The money comes on top of the school rebuilding programme, which the government says will “transform” buildings at 500 schools over the next decade.
