Every pupil in Scotland could have to wear a gender-neutral school uniform as part of plans to cut costs for parents.
The government has launched a public consultation to reform the national uniform policy, which included a draft list of principles all schools would have to follow such as promoting “equality in our classrooms” by removing “unnecessary rules around what each gender should wear”.
The proposals aim to respond to the cost-of-living crisis by introducing a cap on costs that would remove “huge costs on families due to overly specific policies and too few [uniform] suppliers”, according to Ross Greer MSP, education spokesman for the Scottish Greens. As part of the plans to cap the cost of school uniforms, blazers and branded PE kits could be banned and replaced with gender-neutral “generic items of uniform”.
