Teachers will today call on the Scottish Government to press social media companies to take immediate action to stamp out online abuse.
The motion to be moved by NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union at the STUC Congress in Dundee will highlight the negative impacts abuse on social media platforms is having on the mental health of teachers, headteachers and education staff.
It notes that abuse online often occurs outside working hours, leading to fear and anxiety when people are in their own homes.
The motion calls on the Scottish Government to put pressure on social media companies and to support schools to take effective action to ensure the safety of its workforce. It also calls on Ministers to “challenge attempts to undermine schools’ inclusive education and anti-racism practices and activities.”
