Co-educational boarding schools have been left in the dark over how to approach pupils questioning their gender ahead of planned government guidance, education leaders have said.

Head teachers are understood to have received conflicting legal advice over how to respond to a rise in the number of pupils seeking to socially transition and, in some cases, move to a boarding house of the opposite sex.

Transgender pupils guidance being drawn up by Gillian Keegan, the Education Secretary, and Kemi Badenoch, the equalities minister, will aim to clarify situations for schools where children have gender dysphoria.

It will include reassurance to single-sex schools that they can reject transgender pupils without fearing legal action, The Telegraph revealed this week.

The guidance is also expected to say that children who are socially transitioning or questioning their gender should be provided with alternative facilities where appropriate.
