Funding for schools in disadvantaged areas which provides extra support for pupils and families is being axed from 30 June.

Stormont's Department of Education (DE) has written to principals to say funding for the Extended Schools Programme "is no longer available".

The scheme enabled almost 500 schools to provide things like counselling, homework and after-school clubs.

Some used it to pay for breakfasts for pupils as the cost of living rose.

In a letter to schools, the department said it had to make "significant savings" in 2023-24.

That has already led to DE funding being cut for schemes including holiday hunger payments, counselling for primary school children and free books for babies.

The Extended Schools scheme has been running since 2006 and more than £9m was provided to about 500 schools in 2022/23.
