Private schools have been told to focus on keeping fees down than virtue signalling, in the wake of a study exposing their links to slavery.
Famed institutions such as Eton College and Christ’s Hospital historically received money from donors who profited from the slave trade, according to researchers who have suggested reparations should be paid in light of the revelations.
However, such schools have been urged to place emphasis on providing worthwhile education rather than be “seduced” into handing over reparations.
Andrew Lewer, a Tory MP and the chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Private Schools, said: “Although it is right for independent schools to learn more about their history, they ought not to allow themselves to be seduced by organisations or woke academics that do not – to say the least – have their best interests at heart.
“Instead of dreary virtue signalling about reparations, their focus should be on keeping fees down for hard working parents.”
