Parents at a large secondary school are petitioning to have their children’s mobile phones banned during the day after reports of widespread behavioural issues.
In an open letter to the teaching staff at Dunbar Grammar, they highlight numerous incidents that they believe stem from abuse of mobiles.
Reports include “inappropriate filming of staff without their consent”, “videoing of arranged fights” and “fear of students being filmed . . . in the changing room”.
The letter raises concerns that phone use in school has caused “loss of learning”, “increased incidents of bullying and cyberbullying” and “lower attainment levels”.
More than 250 parents have signed in support of limiting phone use for under-16s.
