Teachers are being pushed to “breaking point” by the SNP, critics say, as figures show almost 5,000 are employed on temporary contracts.
Statistics released to the Scottish Conservatives through freedom of information requests to local councils show that 4,951 teachers were employed on temporary contracts at the beginning of June.
The overall figure is likely to be higher as Highland and Fife councils did not respond to the requests.
The EIS, Scotland’s largest teaching union, has said that “precarity and lack of job security is endemic” across the country, despite large class sizes and insufficient support for pupils with additional needs.
