David Johnston has been confirmed as the Department for Education’s children’s minister. The eighth to hold this post within five years, Mr Johnston replaces Claire Coutinho who has been promoted to Energy Secretary.
Announcing Mr Johnston’s appointment on social media platform X - formerly known as Twitter - Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said: ‘I'm looking forward to welcoming @david4wantage to @educationgovuk as our new minister for children, families and wellbeing.’
Mr Johnston, who has been MP for Wantage and Didcot since 2019, was previously chief executive of the Social Mobility Foundation, a charity which runs a range of programmes that incorporate mentoring, internships, university application support and skills development to help young people from low-income backgrounds enter universities and professions.
