Schools were forced to close and households and businesses in more than 50 London postcodes were left without water or with low water pressure this morning after a power supply failure at a local plant.

At 9.30am Thames Water said that an issue at its Ashford and Hampton water treatment works was affecting parts of west and southwest London, forcing several schools to shut for the day.

People living in parts of Putney, Wembley, Twickenham, Richmond, Southfields, Hampton, Uxbridge and White City have all been affected, the water company said.

However, people living in SW11, incorporating much of Battersea and Clapham, also reported problems.
