Speaking at a literary festival last week, the historian Tom Holland, who recently published Pax – the third volume of his trilogy on the history of the Roman Empire – said that while he wished Latin was taught in schools, limited time in the curriculum and the current emphasis on Stem subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) meant that offering classics lessons was no longer strictly necessary, given the plentiful online resources.
