It’s frightening for the National Literacy Trust to report that in 2023 only 43 per cent of children and young people say they read for pleasure.
It’s vital for every child to have the opportunity to discover the joy of reading.
They can learn what life is like in idyllic havens or in war-torn countries, experience extreme poverty or fabulous wealth, live in the past or the future, simply by opening a book.
Reading supports empathy and creativity. It stimulates the imagination, enhances vocabulary, excites and also comforts. Storytelling has always been part of human existence.
