A school has been forced to deny online rumours that it was providing litter trays for pupils who identify as cats.

West Monmouth School in Pontypool, Torfaen, wrote to parents this week saying there would be no special treatment for "pupils who might identify as an animal of any kind".

The rumour followed a hoax in the United States about students who "identify as cats" or "furries".

Torfaen council confirmed the school's letter was genuine.

The rumour has spread to the UK from the US, after Spotify podcast host Joe Rogan was among those who admitted they had spread misinformation.

In her letter to parents, deputy headteacher Claire Hughes wrote: "It has come to our attention that there appears to be a number of queries and concerns raised within the community regarding the use of litter trays at West Monmouth School.

"I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that we do not and will not be planning on providing any litter trays at the school.
