Schools minister Nick Gibb has stepped down from his long-held Department for Education position amid a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Posting on social media site X, formerly Twitter, Gibb wrote: “Over the last few weeks I have been discussing taking up a diplomatic role after the general election. To enable me to do so I have asked the Prime Minister if I can step down from the government at the reshuffle and he has agreed.”

Gibb, who has been MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton for 26 years, will not stand for re-election during the next general election.

He was shadow schools minister from 2005 to 2010 and has served as schools minister on three separate occasions, holding the post for the majority of the last 13 years.
