More than 30 schools in Cornwall were closed or opened late due to hazardous conditions on Thursday, with up to 10cm of snow expected to fall in some parts of the southwest.
Snow also blanketed parts of Yorkshire and the northeast of Scotland. Several collisions were reported to Durham police due to the wintry weather.
Parts of Dartmoor could see up to 10cm of snow, with up to 3cm in other areas of the southwest, according to the Met Office.
Temperatures were forecast to drop “well below freezing” overnight with widespread frost expected. Lows could reach minus 8C in the rural south and minus 7C in rural parts of Wales.
