Are some teachers still trapped in the learning styles myth?
Despite ongoing debunking by academic research, some teachers still believe in learning styles – the idea that students learn best through tailored visual, auditory, or kinesthetic methods.
Unravelling learning styles
The belief, unsupported by scientific evidence, persists even though it’s been declared a myth by leading academics, emerging publications and more and more savvy teachers who are becoming research-rich.
On my travels, when I survey teachers in the room and ask, ‘How do we learn?’ at least half of the audience still believes that we learn best through learning preferences. Last week, I surveyed a room of teachers, and 51 per cent still believed in learning styles.
