Schools have closed after a region of the UK is hit with severe flooding following a deluge or rain.

The severe weather has forced a number of schools in the South West to close on Tuesday. The downpour has already caused flooding in Somerset and Devon leaving journeys in chaos and many unable to leave their homes.

Several schools in the region have already announced their closure, Somerset Council has confirmed, with others expected to follow. The authority said heavy flooding on the roads had left many staff "unable to get to school".

Many schools previously also closed on Monday amidst the rising waters which also flooded some classrooms, Somerset Live reports. Multiple flood warnings and alerts remain in place across the region and several schools may also be forced to extend their closures into today.

A number of primary schools have said they will be closed today, Tuesday, December 5. The Environment Agency has meanwhile issued more than 60 flood warnings across England as heavy rain replaced snow as the nation's major weather concern.

At 6am on Tuesday, 69 flood warnings - where flooding is expected - were in place, mainly in Dorset, Somerset and across the Midlands. There were a further 182 flood alerts, where flooding is considered possible.
