Schools are abandoning exchange visits and trips because of red tape and the huge expense, MPs warn.
Group passports and visa waivers are no longer allowed between the UK and all European Union countries, creating a headache for schools trying to arrange visits to the continent.
Schools have told the All Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Foreign Languages that it takes up to 47 hours of staff time for safeguarding for each trip. It claims there has been a 30 per cent decrease in trips in the past four years.
Lengthy delays at borders, with all pupils required to disembark coaches, are adding hours or even days to visits.
The amount of paperwork is also deterring schools and host families from participating in exchanges.
