Are your quizzes truly transforming student learning?

Recent research reveals that regular quizzing in classrooms significantly boosts student learning and retention, irrespective of subject or grade level…

The research (McDermott et al., 2014) delved into the impact of regular quizzing on student learning, comparing multiple-choice and short-answer formats across different subjects and grade levels.

Studies spanned middle school science classes to high school history, exploring how quizzing influences understanding and long-term knowledge retention. These experiments revealed that quizzing, a staple in teaching, is more than just a tool for assessment; it’s a powerful catalyst for enhancing student learning.

The significance of these findings cannot be overstated.

I remember the occasional buzz in my classroom, especially when we would start our ‘Tech Trivia’ sessions (quizzes); the classroom would come to life(!). These quick-fire quizzes were more than just a fun start to the lesson; they were a carefully chosen strategy, aligning with the compelling research that regular quizzing significantly boosts student learning and retention.

I didn’t know this then, but my goal was simple: engage students and reinforce the material. Little did I know, as recent studies confirm, that these quizzes offered much more! They weren’t just a teaching tool but a significant contribution to outcomes, building deeper understanding and long-term knowledge retention.
