Inclusion and diversity are words on the lips of every senior leadership team in the country and frankly, independent schools are doing a fine job of practising what they preach. Having been involved with private education for the past thirty years, I have first-hand experience of the progress and improvement that has been made. There has been a metamorphosis. However, everything is not as positive as it may seem. There is a problem, and nobody seems to be talking about it. The less able and the late developers are being cancelled.
That may be an overly dramatic statement but, in many establishments, it’s true. When a new head is appointed, his or her success needs to be judged on something. Two big ticket items come instantly to mind: increase the revenue and climb the league tables.
