A teacher has been given £180,000 in compensation after being assaulted at a Scottish school.
The staff member is said to have received the sum after they were left with a serious injury following the incident.
The award was part of a total of £541,499 paid out to members of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) union in personal injury claims last year.
The figure is a stark jump from the £295,597 secured for workplace injuries in 2022. Last year’s payments included five assault claims, with one teacher who was assaulted on three occasions awarded £28,469.
Another was paid £6,020 after suffering a hairline fracture to the jaw when punched by a pupil, while a further teacher was given £4,500 after they were headbutted, causing damage to their teeth.
Another staff member who needed stitches after being assaulted while trying to break up a fight between pupils was given £1,500.
There were also seven accident and health claims. One teacher received £135,000 after they slipped in a school car park and broke their ankle in two places.
Another was given £100,000 in compensation after they slipped on a wet floor, severely damaging their knee and foot. One staff member received £60,000 after they developed a health condition as a result of exposure to various substances.
