How can we encourage schools to facilitate short ‘brain’ breaks during lessons?
Short periods of physical activity in the classroom, performed as a break from the lesson, can activate brain regions and support working memory! (Chatzopoulos et al., 2023)
Just a short break!
In teacher training sessions, I’ve introduced short breaks every 20 minutes, challenging the belief that constant busyness leads to better performance.
A large body of research suggests these breaks can enhance learning for both students and adults.
However, implementing them effectively in classrooms with head teacher support is crucial to prevent disruptions and maintain curriculum coverage.
