Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has announced that new data looking at the numbers of children with Down's syndrome will be collected in the school census.
The inclusion of Down's syndrome in the census aims to establish the number students with Down's Syndrome to guide future policy making, following the Down Syndrome Act 2022.
Announcing the census change in an article for The Sun, where she detailed her experience of having a nephew navigating the special educational needs system, Keegan stated that: “Government is reforming the special educational needs system to make it more supportive for parents and their children.
“This data will help us implement changes and improve the system, creating a space where every child is supported, encouraged, and celebrated.”
