A blunder by HMRC has caused hundreds of teachers to be ordered to pay thousands of pounds more in tax.
The payroll error has been causing sleepless nights for staff at one of the county's largest academy trusts in Norfolk.
Over 300 employees at the Diocese of Norwich Education and Academies Trust (DNEAT) have been sent letters from His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) informing them they owe large amounts of unpaid tax.
They started getting letters began after DNEAT, which runs 40 schools in Norfolk, changed its payroll provider from a company called EPM Ltd to another called Edupay.
During the switch, it appears the tax office was mistakenly provided with two sets of details, making it seem that employees had two jobs with the trust rather than one.
DNEAT kept making the correct tax deductions, and staff began to receive threatening letters from HMRC demanding more money.
It's been developing over a period of months and now some alarmed staff have been told they owe as much as £7,000.
Some have already had incorrect, larger, tax deductions taken from monthly pay packets.
The trust, which employs more than 1,000 people, says it has provided information to HMRC to correct the error.
But the tax office is continuing to pursue workers and, in some cases, make deductions.
One teacher, who did not wish to be named, was told in February 2023 that she owed more than £2,000.
In December 2023 and last month (January 2024) the tax office made extra deductions of £900.
