Scotland’s oldest school is embarking on a year-long programme of events to mark its 900th anniversary and raise more than £4 million.

The founding of the High School of Glasgow will be celebrated with a a gala evening at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in June.

Other events include a 900km (559 miles) sponsored cycle from Devon to the city centre in September, an art exhibition and a sporting showcase involving current and former pupils.

Pupils have already planted 900 trees and in April a civic reception is being held at at Glasgow City Chambers, not far from Glasgow Cathedral, where the school’s roots were first laid down. A commemorative and thanksgiving service will be held at the cathedral in September.
