What if we could relax more at the end of term?

When I started teaching 20 years ago, I distinctly remember a wonderful period of ‘winding down,’ which occurred at the end of the summer term. Structured lessons gave way to rounders games and observational drawing on the field.

More recently, I have scoffed indignantly at anyone who considers that any sort of ‘winding down’ occurs with the curriculum to finish. I also understand that attempting to keep classroom order is a challenge when there is less structure for pupils who have difficulty managing routine changes.
