Schools in Wales will continue to have an extra inset day next academic year to help teachers deliver the new curriculum. Education Minister Jeremy Miles confirmed the move in an oral statement to the Senedd on Tuesday June 28.
The extra day keeps the number of inset days in Wales at six. Up to 2019, there were five inset days a year but this was increased to six days - to prepare for the new curriculum - for the three years to 2022. That has now been extended to 2023.
The plan had been to revert to five days next academic year but Mr Miles confirmed he intends to continue with six days for 2022-23 after pressure from unions. The National Education Union Cymru welcomed the move but said teachers were under workload pressure and members wanted to "see the minister go further".
