Since its American naval base closed in 1992, the remote Scottish village of Dunoon has struggled to stay afloat. Two hours’ west of Glasgow, its 7,500 inhabitants live with a high street full of shuttered shops. Peeling Victorian villas lie empty.
Now, however, all this may be set to change – thanks to the reputation of the town’s school, which has just been rated as one of the world’s best.
Dunoon Grammar, a school of just 750 pupils, has made it to the final three of the World’s Best School Prize, an accolade sponsored by T4 Education, a global community of schools and teachers. It’s been shortlisted in the category of “Community Collaboration”, a great achievement given the thousands of entries.
