Music lessons are mostly the preserve of wealthier children, who are three times more likely to sing in a choir or play in a band, a study has found.

The report echoes findings of the Times Education Commission by saying that a grant should be ring-fenced to provide enrichment programmes for poorer pupils.

It urges the government to make better use of parents and other volunteers to run after-school activities, saying British parents are far less likely to help than elsewhere in the world.

The report is from Onward, a centre-right think-tank co-founded by Neil O’Brien, the Conservative MP, and Will Tanner, Rishi Sunak’s new deputy chief of staff.
