Dozens of head teachers would earn more money than many SNP ministers if union pay demands are met as talks continue over strikes that closed nearly every school in Scotland yesterday.

There are 77 head teachers currently earning between £91,000 and £99,600 who are seeking a 10 per cent rise that would take them above £100,000 for the first time. The bill to meet union demands to give heads £9,000 more would come to nearly £500,000, enough to pay the annual salary of 16 probationary teachers.

The pay rise would put them on higher salaries than the £98,000 earned by Claire Haughey, the children’s minister, and Jamie Hepburn, the higher and further education minister, and almost as much as Shirley-Anne Somerville, the education secretary.
