Scotland’s largest schools union has welcomed a proposal to put up taxes for everyone earning more than £40,000, even though this will affect teachers.
The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) said that a new “fairer taxes for a fairer future” strategy, which would take 43p for every £1 earned between £40,000 and £75,000, would help to fund “a fair pay rise for teachers”.
However, more than 80 per cent of teachers already earn more than £40,000 and the tax changes proposed by the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) would leave them no better off than the offer they have rejected.
Teachers have threatened more strikes next month in protest at an “insulting” 5 per cent pay offer.
