Teaching unions are planning a series of on-and-off strikes throughout February and March with total shutdown expected in schools on walkout days, the head of the UK’s biggest teaching union has said.
Dr Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), told i that potential strike action would see teachers walk out for “sporadic chunks of days” over the coming two months, mimicking recent industrial action by rail unions.
i understands that two or three-day stoppages throughout February and March will be the most likely tactic, rather than one long period of school closures.
It means potential teacher strikes would echo recent industrial action held by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), which saw more than 40,000 rail workers walk out on intermittent dates in the run-up to Christmas.
