Eithne Hughes, Director of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) Cymru, comments on the written statement of Jeremy Miles, Minister for Education and Welsh Language, about the reintroduction in Wales of the Capped 9 points score measure of school performance in GCSEs.
“The decision of the Welsh government to reintroduce the Capped 9 points score measure of school performance in GCSEs is a retrograde step which will penalise schools serving disadvantaged communities.
“This performance measure was suspended in 2020 because of the cancellation of exams due to the coronavirus pandemic. To bring it back now makes no sense as schools are still experiencing a great deal of turbulence and it is not a level playing field.
