The research tracked 10 and 11-year olds in the Bristol area from May to December last year, measuring their physical activity and that of their parents using accelerometers.
Even though classes had returned to school in March, the children were active for about 56 minutes a day, on average, each weekday. That was eight minutes less than before the pandemic. Only about 36 per cent of the children were meeting the national guidelines for at least an hour of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. They were less active at the weekend, taking part in about 46 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on Saturday and Sunday.
