Teachers are likely to pause strike action during exam season this summer, the head of the National Education Union (NEU) has told i.

Dr Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the NEU, refused to definitively rule out further walkout dates beyond March but said doing so “would certainly lose parental support” and play into ministers’ hands.

“You would have to be very, very careful about striking during exam season because it would be a very easy way to lose parental support and respect,” she told i.

“And I don’t think the profession would choose to do that. Any action that the union took that would affect exam season would certainly lose parental support. As we found out today, there is a huge amount of parental support and we want to build on that.”

The NEU has so far announced seven days of strike action throughout February and March, which will see teachers walk out in a patchwork of regional and national action.
