More than half of schools in England either completely closed or restricted attendance last Wednesday amid mass teacher strikes, Government data shows.
Department for Education figures, collected from 16,400 primary and secondary schools, showed 43.9 per cent of schools were fully open, 42.8 per cent were partially open, and 8.9 per cent were fully shut.
Hundreds of thousands of teachers took action along with train drivers, civil servants and university lecturers, on what was dubbed “Walkout Wednesday” – the biggest UK strike day for a decade.
The teachers’ strike, organised by the National Education Union (NEU), was the first of seven days of action throughout February and March.
