Thousands of school pupils are missing out on valuable life skills as trips abroad remain forbidden in some Scottish state schools following the Covid pandemic.

International travel has yet to resume for students in Edinburgh while the city’s private schools and most other local authorities resumed foreign trips months ago.

All international travel restrictions were lifted in March last year, and most schools began planning their foreign excursions.

The city council said a new process for planning and approving overseas visits has yet to be launched. It will take risks associated with Covid into consideration but is also to take “environmental sustainability” into account.

School trips are also discouraged by Falkirk council due to global uncertainty, although the authority is open to exceptions.
